Rubicon contributed to the development of this international project and coordinates the actions in Turkey. The Rubicon activities are contributing to the continued efforts of the IPANET at 3 IPAs in the Kahramanmaras Province of Turkey. Volunteers are monitoring rare plants and taking conservation actions along with holding awareness raising activities. The project includes other activities such as holding technical workshops, development of awareness-raising materials and species action planning.
This work is part of the international partnership project “Conserving wild plants and habitats for people in the South and East Mediterranean (IPA-Med)”, which is funded by the MAVA Foundation and led by the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean and Plantlife International. The project covers North Africa, the Balkans and Turkey. The aims of this 3 year project (2015 – 2017) include improving the quality and quantity of data about plants in the Mediterranean; influencing policy & decision making at the regional and national levels; taking conservation actions for Important Plant Areas (IPA) and improving networking at the regional and national levels with regards to plant conservation.
Four endemic plants were chosen to symbolise the Turkish section of the project and are used in our awareness-raising efforts; these are shown below (from left to right) Astragalus dumanii, Iris kirkwoodiae, Psephellus goeksunensis and Salvia marashica.
